India has a vibrant capital market, which is more than a century old. The paper based settlement of trades carried substantial problems like settlement risk, bad delivery, delays, theft. The enactment of Depository Act in August 1996 paved the way for establishment of Depositories in India, with the objective of providing convenient, dependable and secure depository services at affordable cost to all market participants. The depository system has effectively eliminated paper-based certificates which were prone to be settlement risks, delays, fake, forged, counterfeit resulting in bad deliveries.

In Depository System, securities are held in the electronic form by the Depository. Investors can avail Depository services through Depository Participant (DP) and they have to open a DP Account/ Demat Account. Dematerialisation (Demat) is a quick, convenient, secure, faster, safer and automated service alternative to the physical mode of securities. Following are the basic services in Depository services:

Dematerilisation: Clients can convert physical certificates into electronic balances.
Rematerilisation: Clients can convert electronic holding into physical certificates.
